The Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) has recently released a report providing migration statistics for the 2015/2016 financial year.

The report indicates the following figures:

  • Around 7.7 million temporary visas were granted, including 4.8 million visitor visas and 1.9 million Special Category (subclass 444) visa for New Zealand citizens.
  • Nearly 190,000 permanent residence visas were granted, including 128,550 skilled visas and 57,400 family stream visas.
  • 19,107 were granted humanitarian & refugee visas.
  • 133,126 people became Australian citizens by conferral.

The report indicates that over 99% of foreign nationals maintain a lawful status while they are in Australia. The report also indicates a tighter stance from the DIBP in regards to compliance, including the removal of over 15,000 unlawful non-citizens and over 400 illegal worker warning notifications. As at 1 June 2016, 2,200 people were in immigration detention.
