Baker Love Lawyers is Newcastle’s oldest law firm.
The practice was established on 26 March 1875 when William Henry Baker opened his first legal office in Market Street, Newcastle.
Then, as it is now, Newcastle was Australia’s principal coal port. The legal work of that time was varied and different. Sailors were charged with desertion or disobeying lawful commands, apprentices faced legal action for absconding from employment and women could be sued for breach of promise if they broke an engagement.
Following William Baker’s death in 1931, his son Fred Baker carried on the family business and formed a partnership with solicitor and former WW2 military intelligence officer, John Milton Wallace Love. Mr Love’s contribution to the firm is still recognised with his name forming an integral part of the firm’s identity and history.
Over time, Baker Love Lawyers has had multiple name changes and structures. Since the doors were first opened in Newcastle, the firm has had offices in Wallsend, Raymond Terrace, Singleton and Charlestown.
Some of Newcastle’s most respected solicitors and lawyers have contributed to the success of Baker Love, including The Honourable Stewart Austin who served as a Judge in the Family Court of Australia. The wealth of experience, knowledge and history forms a legacy that is passed on to each of our solicitors as they in turn form essential links for the future Baker Love team.
In 2008, Baker Love Lawyers consolidated its offices into one central practice located in Wallsend. Wallsend is a growing area and surrounded by extensive Newcastle commercial and residential development. With easy access and plenty of free parking, our Wallsend location is a significant benefit to our clients and staff.
Baker Love remains a strong and experienced legal practice and we’re proud to have served people throughout Newcastle and the Hunter Valley for more than 145 years.
We’re proud of our rich past and that we have a reputation for outstanding legal work, strong ethics and the depth of honesty required to practice law with integrity.
