Major changes to road rules across Australia came into effect this month.
As of 1 July 2025, drivers across the country will now face tougher penalties and more surveillance as governments crack down on unsafe driving. Whether you’re a daily commuter or just an occasional driver, it’s important to understand what’s changed and how it could affect you.
Here’s a summary of the biggest changes and what you need to watch out for if you’re in New South Wales.
Mobile Phone Detection Is Getting Smarter
New AI-powered mobile detection cameras are being rolled out nationally. These high-tech surveillance systems can now identify:
- If a driver is holding, using, or even touching their phone
- Whether you’re using your phone while the car is moving or stopped at traffic lights
The penalties:
- Fines of up to $1,209
- Up to 5 demerit points
Even briefly checking a notification while stopped can lead to significant penalties. These changes aim to address rising crash rates linked to distraction behind the wheel.
New Speed Limit Zones Across Australia
States and territories will also be implementing new and revised speed limits starting in July. This comes in response to an increase in road fatalities nationally.
Check with your local roads authority to see if speed limits in your area are changing, especially in regional, school, and construction zones.
Seatbelt Surveillance
From 1 July, mobile phone detection cameras in NSW will also be used to detect seatbelt offences.
The reason? In NSW, 15% of road deaths involve someone not wearing a seatbelt. Between 2019 and 2023, 150 people died on NSW roads while unrestrained.
Higher Penalties for No Seatbelt
Expect steeper fines and more demerit points if you’re caught not wearing your seatbelt, or allowing a passenger to travel unrestrained.
No More Ticketless Parking Fines
The NSW Government is scrapping ticketless parking fines after widespread complaints. Drivers reported receiving infringement notices without any warning or physical ticket on their vehicle.
From 1 July, parking inspectors must once again leave a physical paper ticket on your car if you’re being fined, so you won’t be left in the dark.
